The most visible part of a product is rarely the most important part of it. Interfaces shape understanding, but systems shape what is possible.

Draw the invisible parts first

When I begin a build, I try to draw the invisible parts first:

  • the information
  • the decisions
  • the constraints
  • the feedback loops

Once those are clear, the interface becomes an explanation — not a decoration.

This is not an argument against polish. It is an argument for earning polish through a sound structure underneath it.
